4 Star (Rough Water) Group Trip Report to Skye  –  Ronnie’s First Weekend Trip With DCKC

Friday 15th November to Sunday 17th November ‘24  By Ronnie G.  On a personal point of note when Misha posted a thread on the DCKC Whatsapp group a couple of months ago about looking for people who wanted to improve their paddling skills and experience on rough water in a safe environment I was very tempted as this is an area I’m very keen to improve. I would have to admit to feeling a bit apprehensive about whether my current kayaking skills were at a suitable level to join this group or not. When I discussed this proposed new group with Misha he explained that a group was set up by Alan Rollo a number of years ago offering the opportunity for peer group paddlers to practice and develop their skills in challenging conditions but in low consequence venues and that he was looking to restart / re-energise this initiative again. Misha explained to me this was likely to be pretty challenging...

Geoff

Name? Geoff Nisbet (30) Where do you stay?  Crieff What made you start kayaking/canoeing?  A group of us got an "introduction to sea kayaking" gift voucher experience for a day on Loch Lomond. I was hooked instantly and knew it was for me. A few weeks later I found a sea kayak for sale on Gumtree and I haven't looked back since.  My dad, Danny, followed suit and bought a kayak at the same time. We initially paddled mainly on Loch Lomond and then dabbled with a few saltwater lochs. The best thing we did was join DCKC where we developed our skills and have been fortunate enough to go on so many incredible trips.  What do you enjoy about the sport? I love the adventure. I like loading my kayak with all my supplies and heading off on a journey where you can reach and explore places that otherwise wouldn't be possible. Is it different to what you expected? Not really – I have always enjoyed sports such...

Name?Celia Gray How long have you been a club member?I’ve been a member of the club for around 6 years Where do you stay?I live in Strathaven South Lanarkshire What made you start kayaking or canoeing? My first time in a sea kayak was when I was cycling to Applecross and had a half day's introduction to sea kayaking. I loved it and was instantly hooked! I love being able to access areas with my kayak that you couldn’t get to normally i.e. caves, and small secluded beaches. I also love the wildlife having had amazing opportunities to see sea eagles, shear waters, dolphins, minkie whale, otters and more recently I seen an Orca up close! What do you enjoy about the sport?Kayaking can offer very different experiences. One minute you can be paddling along enjoying the view, the next being tossed around on a confused sea. The challenges it brings are immense and always keep you alert and...

NameStewart Rattray (38) How long have you been a club member 2 years Where do you stay ? East Dunbartonshire What made you start kayaking or canoeing? So I’m a returnee to kayaking and canoeing … I came back to it after a long time away.  We had kayaks and canoes and sailing dinghies as kids - my father was a keen boater but I stopped ~17/18. I came back to kayaking in the autumn of Covid during the periods of limited movement simply because it was one of the few things we were still allowed to do. I was very lucky to get landed with Sandy Johnston as a coach who quickly put me to work (there was a LOT of work to do!). It went from there. What do you enjoy about the sport? I like to be challenged and I need some excitement to get my kicks. Whitewater paddling gives me that.  Big & scary or sedate & calm .. you make Kayaking into whatever...

After a kayak excursion in Ha Long Bay, Viet Nam, realising that it would be good way of interacting with Scottish lochs rather than just driving past them. What do you enjoy about the sport? Getting to see places in a more connected, up close and personal way. Is it different to what you expected?! It pushes me beyond my comfort zone. All over Scotland including Barra, St Kilda, Skye and Orkney. And further afield including Anglesey, Northern Ireland, Croatia, Sardinia, Fuerteventura, Greece, British Columbia, the Galapagos and Antarctica. What's been your favourite trip so far? The Mother of all Classics

Following the Shiants disappointment I must admit to hitting the pub.  As the hangover was clearing I cheekily texted Graham in case he fancied a Sunday river.    Before we knew it there were four of us powering up the A82 towards the River Etive.  I think Scott, Davie, Graham and myself would agree - a fantastic adventure on one of Scotland's classic rivers....

The Shiants Shan’t be Once Again

We set out to cross the Minch via the rat infested islands of the Shiants.  There's not many people I know can cook up a plan like this but Rab is definitely one of them! Julia, Rab, Paul Cromey and myself left for the north of Skye on a Thursday evening.  Having planned to drive up with Paul, I had to rethink  when I couldn't get him on the phone.  I ended up driving up on my own - perhaps a saving grace in retrospect.  After Fort William I let a ambulance overtake, and when it turned towards Kyle of Lochalsh onto the A87 I started to hope it wasn't anything to do with Paul, who was most likely ahead on that very same road. It's a fast road with few cars.  It was just over the lip of a hill that I found a swarm of blue lights, and right at the center, confirming my worse fears, a mangled car with a...

Make, Mend & Paint wkend

I have just added an event to the calendar for the last  weekend in March.  A kind of late addition as it's taken us a while to formulate a plan a check logistics like electricity supply and tools etc Here's the info again: Repair and maintenance  to equipment and containers Ian, Mark, Andy and myself will be pottering about at the outdoor container over the weekend of the 29-30th March to do some repair and maintenance work to the containers, storage and equipment.  Any helping hands would be greatly appreciated. Rough aims for the weekend are: 1/ repair and paint outdoor container (and welding if weather allows) 2/ re-arrange kayak/canoes so they all fit into the rack! 3/ make new paddle rack 4/ general tidy and re-shuffle 5/ eating bacon rolls and drinking coffee! There are obviously day trips planned over the weekend.  That's not a problem at all, as rather than people turning up for the whole weekend, we're ideally looking for folk to come along for a morning...
