Name?
Hannah
Where do you stay?
Glasgow
What made you start kayaking, canoeing?
I love water, sea, river or loch and as far as I can remember always wanted to try kayaking and canoeing. It had not been the right time and place until a few years ago when I came to Glasgow.
What do you enjoy about the sport?
Difficult question. It can give you a different perspective of places/landscapes from the water and allows you to get to places you would otherwise not be able to get to (thinking of sea caves)
Is it different to what you expected?
Very much so. I had no idea how far you could go in a kayak, what it would allow you to see. I know this sounds a bit ignorant, but how dangerous it can get too. I especially realised how much I enjoyed the company of other kayakers. I could go on, but will let you discover the joys of kayaking for yourself.
Where have you been kayaking?
Along the coast and islands of Scotland.
What’s been your favourite trip so far?
No trip is the same. Sounds super cliche but I could not pick a favourite one.
Have trips always gone to plan?!
No! Some turned out even better than planned and others maybe not so well. But all ended well. I guess if it all went according to plan, there would be no stories to tell.
What’s your most memorable ‘oh shit’ moment?
It was when a seal took a sudden liking to me or my boat (who knows?). A bit too much for my liking. He/She followed me for the whole trip and got to nudging my boat. Every nudge was an ‘oh shit’ moment. I was dreading a capsize and getting bitten. I know very dramatic but it was all I could think of – Seal bites are nasty am told.
What’s your funniest kayaking moment?
As above. It was funny only in hindsight.
Do you have a special move?
Nope.
What’s the one kayaking skill you’d like to learn?
I want to say roll but I can hear someone whispering “high and low brace”. Best not to capsize in the first place.
What does the ultimate kayaking trip have for you?
Any trip which ends with either a campfire or a hot beverage with sticky buns in a cozy cafe.
What’s been the most challenging trip you’ve been on?
I struggle with long distance paddles – perhaps a trip to Skye.
Where else would you like to kayak?
For me it’s not so much about the where but with who.
