River Paddling

River Paddling There has not been a lot of active river paddling in the club over the last year. We want to turn this around as while there are enough club members with the appropriate skills to have an active river paddling programme, they just don’t seem to be aware of each other. In order to improve things the club is planning to establish two paddling groups. These will be the: 1. White Water Group, and 2. Beginners River Group. The White Water Group will be aimed at river paddlers who are competent to paddle on Grade 3 – 4 water. Rivers falling into this category include the Tay at Grandtully, Nith, Allan, Tummel, Orchy etc. The white water group is open to both kayak and canoe paddlers. The purpose of this group is to find a focus for those paddlers who want to paddle more advanced rivers and the plan is to improve the paddling abilities of members, provide the opportunity to work towards...

Coaching levels, and what they mean – BCU Level 1

The BCU Level 1 Coach For many coaches the BCU UKCC Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Paddlesport is the first step on the coaching pathway. The qualification introduces the fundamentals of safe, ethical and effective coaching. Candidates are trained to coach basic skills to paddlers in any type of paddlesport craft in a flat-water environment. A range of coaching tips, tricks games and activities are built into the course, along with time spent developing technical and tactical understanding of these skills. The Level 1 Coach can plan, deliver, and review short coaching sessions; normally with the support of a more qualified coach. They can work with paddlers at any stage of development; receiving specific training to coach paddlers in their first year of activity and to run taster sessions. To complete the level 1 Coach you must: Decide if you wish to achieve the award as Bank Based or Boat Based Coach - Candidates who do not hold the required personal performance award...

Roddy McDowell is our next Guest Sea Kayaking Coach Tuesday 13 August

We have just confirmed that Roddy McDowell will be our guest coach at the club night on Tuesday 13th August. Roddy is an L5 Sea Kayak coach and the lead coach for www.kayakbute.co.uk  as well as a UK distributer for tiderace kayaks. One of the good things is that we let the guest coach bring his/her own style and view to the evening - so we can't let you know what is planned! P.S. It would be great if any sea kayakers planning to come along could make sure they arrive and are changed in good time.  ...

Early warning! Going Outside.

Just a quick reminder that we move to Loch Lomond for the first Tuesday of May, leaving the warmth of the pool for the great outdoors. The sessions are still suitable for all, from absolute beginner to experts. More info on the calendar.... but please remember- - we meet at the club outdoor container - not the pool container! : Club Locations - you are likely to be able to choose whether to paddle canoe, kayak or sea kayak, although this may depend on your own abilities, the group sizes on the night and the weather conditions. There is always somewhere suitable (except for tropical lightning storms! ) - although the club has a small trailer that can take up to 4 canoes and 6 kayaks, cars with roof racks will be needed to transport all the boats needed. - later on in the year we may venture to the River Clyde, Lake of Menteith, Loch Ard, a gorge walk or more. Dates will...

More Club Grant Success!

Great news We recently received confimation that our application to the 2014 Communities lottery fund has been successful! This application was to help us develop the options in the club for young (and not so young) paddlers by purchasing some boats suitable for canoe  polo and also to help with the training costs of more club coaches.  We have been awarded £2000 to help with this, and with the forms safely returned we should be able to start choosing the new boats and also finding suitable club members who would like to add some coaching to their skills soon. Possible new boat is a  revenge which will be suitable for use in the pool and also on flat water outside. If you are thinking that a bit of coaching training might suit you then contact any of the club coaches! The level 1 coach course is normally over 2 weekends and is ideal for a 2 star standard of paddler.  The club would...

Club Grant Success!

We have been hard at work trying to get some grant support for the club to help keep up with how busy we are and have had a couple of great successes! The Sports Council for Glasgow have awarded us £360 to help fund the purchase of a new Karnali kayak for the pool and also flatwater outdoors. The Karnali is the more up to date version of the CK320 that fits the larger paddlers in the club. Thank you to the Sports Council for this help - much appreciated. (The boat is on order!) West Dumbartonshire Council though their "Sustainable Sport, Stong Futures" project have offered the club funding to help us set up a new section in the club. We wrote a proposal to start a competition section for our junior members, intially focussed on polo along with slalom and sprint. Following a grant meeting in December they have agreed to award us approximately £1400 to fund the purchase of...
