Open Canoeing
Open Canoe on Loch Lomond

Open canoeing is a popular activity, especially for families, as a canoe is much more stable and has great carrying capacity.    It can also accomodate 2/3 people easily.

Suitable for all ages and abilities, it’s the ultimate form of paddle relaxation – what could be better than gently paddling down a slow moving river, spotting Herons and Deer?    For the more adventurous, you can test your canoe handling skills on white-water or sailing on open water.

Canoeing can also be a more comfortable way to paddle as you can change seating position and stand up for that all important leg stretch.    However they aren’t the lightest of crafts and it can be more difficult to transport but they can be loaded onto a normal car roof rack.

The unique thing about canoeing is that you can navigate different water environments in one boat.   In a canoe you can travel across wide lochs, navigate river systems, and even paddle on the sea (in calm conditions).   As such when you are learning to canoe you are practicing the same skills as someone taking part in river or sea kayaking.   However, the more you advance in a particular discipline, the more technical the skills become and this is why the BCU awards are discipline specific.

Scotland is lucky, in that, we have so many beautiful rivers and inland sea lochs.   Many are right on our doorstep.   Popular club trip locations include Loch Lomond, Loch Ard, Loch Leven, River Endrick, River Teith, and River Tay, to name but a few.

We have something for everyone so why not check out our calendar for planned canoe trips?
